Ways you can help

A few ways to help lessen the effects of water pollution and water pollution its' self are: Bringing your own bag to your local supermarket to shop, try not use plastic bags and bottles (plastic bags can take 1,000 years to biodegrade), try to recycle as often as you can with anything able (plastic jugs take upwards of 1,000,000 years to biodegrade), don't use styrofoam at all unless recycling it (it takes over 1,000,000 years to biodegrade). Volunteering with NGO's in your area and other groups trying to stop water pollution is a great way to help and protect your environment. Many organizations accept donations which is also another way to help if you don't have the time to get out yourself. But, all in all the best way to help out water pollution is to not cause it, recycling your plastics and trying to live a sustainable life wil help out greatly in the fight against water pollution.

Why Should you care?

Every year more and more plastic bags and other plastic products are produced. The more plastic produced the more dumped in oceans. Every year the average Human uses an average of a whopping 130 plastic bags alone, that's not even counting the amount of other plastic pollutants each Human uses every year, especially plastic bottles. Well you might think that water pollution in ocean only effects animals. Well, it can also effect people. When a small organism in the ocean eats a pollutant, the animals who prey on it are also affected, and so on. Fish that have eaten anything poisonous, can pass it on to humans.

A Global Issue

Every year the world uses upwards of 500 billion plastic bags, the amount of them that end up the oceans and lakes in unprecedented. Every year millions of marine animals die from plastic pollutants alone. They are covered in plastic or even eat the plastic bag as a whole, destroying their digestive system and even cause a chain reaction also killing the animals that feed on on the animals who have attempted to eat the plastic bags.

The Truth:

Background

Personally I have been raised in a family that knew quite alot about water pollution. My parents ran a printing company baised entirely around waterless printing. The amount of water lost in printing is staggering and was really a shame. Waterless printing has around been adopted almost entirely in Japan and it is emberassing how far behind america was. My parents have been recognized for their works and just recently recevied the voyager award for their works in the field. Unfortunately most people haven't got the background I do in water pollution. It is however an easy subject to learn about. There are many resources relating to water pollution and we hope to use this blog to tell you about a few of them.

Introduction

Greetings welcome and thank you for coming to this blog. We hope to accomplish a few different things here. We hope to spread increased awareness of how big and important of a problem water pollution is. Water pollution is a hugely underestimated problem and one of incredible importance to our world. Water is the drop of life, the most important resource that life requires, and in peril. Hopefully through this blog you will learn more about earths most important resource and be inspired to act.

Water Pollution: A Growing Problem (in the bay area)

Water pollution is a growing problem in the Bay Area. Almost 4 billion plastic bags are used in the Bay Area every year. More than 1 million of those plastic bags end up in the bay every year. However all is not lost for the bay area. Many organizations are working hard to protect this incredibly beautiful and huge bay. The North Marin Water District is a heavily involved organization for the bay, and I would highly recommend checking out this site and browsing around for a little bit, they are a great resource to learn more about this increasing problem.
